Trip Planner:   Europe  /  UK  /  Scotland  /  Glasgow  /  City Chambers
Take a free guided tour of City Chambers, a historic building dominating George Square and housing the Glasgow City Council. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 based on a competition-winning design by architect William Young. Officially opened for business by Queen Victoria, the building hosted its first council meeting in October of 1889. The exterior features sculptures by artist James Alexander Ewing, who designed the central Jubilee Pediment in honor of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The interior includes a grand staircase made of marble and alabaster, with a ceiling decorated in gold leaf and topped by a stained-glass dome. Daily tours of the site conclude on the upper gallery, offering a detailed look at the iconic dome. • One of the jewels in the crown in the city of Glasgow, The City Chambers is a stunning multi level floored building with a grand interior marble staircase. The main banqueting hall is an incredible setting for a party or event and plenty of space for drinks and small receptions. The service is extremely good for events.
  • This was an amazing free tour in Glasgow. Done at 10:30 and 2:30 daily. We had a lady called Donna as our guide and she was so so good. She was entertaining and so so informative about all sorts of things and interesting facts of Glasgow and Scotland. This tour is 1 hour long. The building is magnificent!
