Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Gateshead

Watch and find out why locals have nicknamed this span across the River Tyne the "Blinking Eye Bridge." In contrast to a drawbridge that lifts or bends in the middle, this pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge swings on a horizontal axis to allow boats to pass under it. Watch as the arch lowers toward the water and the curved bridge lifts toward the sky, leaving two low-angled arches above the river. To see it tilt, check the schedule posted at each end of the bridge. • This architecture marvel is both beautiful and practical. Unfortunately, we were only able to see it in its "regular" position and not tilted. The bridge is beautifully lit at night.  more »

  • The secret to a good bridge is being able to cross something without letting you fall into that thing, and letting the thing it's crossing go about its way. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is brilliant at achieving this. Spanning the River Tyne it serves pedestrian and cycle access from Gateshead Quays to Newcastle Quays, providing brilliant views of both, and of the industrious Tyne River itself. I have walked and cycled over the Gateshead Millennium bridge many times and not once fell into the River Tyne, so as a bridge I rate it very highly indeed.
  • Great place. Both an amazing (and simple) design and a great place to sit and view the waterside and other 6 bridges. Best of all, when you see it go up and down - so check the timetable on the bridge 12 noon is a common time for it to be swivelled. Parking not easy but not impossible. Right next door to the fabulous and free Baltic modern art gallery.
