Must see · National Park · Nature / Park
Galloway Forest Park is a forest park operated by Forestry and Land Scotland, principally covering woodland in Dumfries and Galloway. It is claimed to be the largest forest in the UK. The park was granted Dark Sky Park status ("Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park") in November 2009, being the first area in the UK to be so designated.
The park, established in 1947, covers 774 square kilometres (299 sq mi) and receives over 800,000 visitors per year. The three visitor centres at Glen Trool, Kirroughtree, and Clatteringshaws receive around 150,000 each year. Much of the Galloway Hills lie within the boundaries of the park and there is good but rough hillwalking and also some rock climbing and ice-climbing within the park. Within or near the boundaries of the park are several well developed mountain bike tracks, forming part of the 7stanes project.

As well as catering for recreation, the park includes economically valuable woodland, producing 500,000 tons of timber per year.

Galloway Forest Park and the people who visit it and work in it were the subject of a six-part BBC One documentary series aired in early 2018 entitled "The Forest".

  • Lots of walks through different terrains. Beautiful scenery and woodlands , small lochs and plentiful wildlife. Of course if you are there at night you may get chance to see the wonderful stars...  more »
  • This is a beautiful park with several peaks, lakes and walks. It's crucial to visit on a dry day, as the rain would block more of the views and make the walks dangerously slippery.  more »
  • Absolute heaven on earth. This place took my breath away and I have been all over England and Wales exploring.... For my first Scottish wild camping experience this could not have impressed me more. I have seen the Highlands, Glen Coe, Ben Nevis.... Even they do not compare to the beauty of Galloway, I am instantly hooked. Seriously it looks like the Canadian wilderness. So easy to turn off the main roads and quickly get to the middle of nowhere. I returned only weeks later and this is now my favourite place for camping trips, I intend to explore as much of this area as I possibly can.
  • Excellent Mountain Biking trail centre. Red and Black trails are well marked, well kept and great fun to ride. Scenery is awesome. Highly recommended
