Powderham Castle, Exeter

4.3
Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenary, Powderham Castle is the home of his descendants, the 18th Earl and Countess of Devon. The family’s involvement in history, from the War of the Roses to the Civil War, ensures that you’ll find enough here to keep you busy for hours. To visit the castle, you must take a guided tour. On nice days, take a tractor tour of the grounds to see wildlife and the estuary. Enjoy the other attractions on the estate, including a forge, cafe, playgrounds, and nature trails. At the Powderham Country Store, buy a range of goods from fresh produce to textiles, all made on the castle grounds. • Great place both for history and children. We had a great day here .We were lucky in that Tractor Ted was there this week and our 18 month old granddaughter loved the toy tractors and sitting in the real ones. There is a great wall garden with a wide number of animals in there .The children love it. The house is great .Full of history but there are two tours. These have bookable times so make sure you do this at the ticket office The guides were very knowledgeable and answered guests questions when asked. The house show a history going back 600 years. Great day out both on a wet or dry day.
  • Great place to visit for historical interest and relaxation! Detailed tours of castle run throughout day and lovely grounds to explore at leisure. Pets corner and play area very relaxed and fun place for children to enjoy.
