Suspected witches used to be drowned at Princes Street Gardens, now one of the city’s most notable parks, renowned for its impeccable lawns and lush woodlands surrounding Edinburgh Castle. Located at the heart of the city’s World Heritage Site, the park was created in two phases in the 1770s and 1820s following the long draining of the Nor Loch, an artificial lake that formed part of the castle’s medieval defenses. The site now includes several prominent statues and memorials, including the Scott Monument, a Gothic spire built in 1844 to honor Sir Walter Scott. You'll also see statues of the explorer David Livingstone and poet Allan Ramsay, as well as the world’s first floral clock, displaying over 30,000 colorful plants. Great place for a stroll after touring Edinburgh Castle. Lovely flowers, lots of hills. The park it's below street level so it blocks out the noise and feels like an oasis. Public toilets were clean. Playground was nice. There was a small cafe and outdoor seating, but we didn't try it.
Dressed up for the Edinburgh International Festival, the gardens are full of blooms, vendors, and the stage for the final concert and fireworks. Why not 5 stars? I didn't see designated entrances for wheelchairs, and I did see people turning back from a few stairs-only areas. I guess locals may know how to navigate if they need ramps. A nice stop to smell the roses, really.
