Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh

#4 of 921 in Parks in Scotland
Suspected witches used to be drowned at Princes Street Gardens, now one of the city’s most notable parks, renowned for its impeccable lawns and lush woodlands surrounding Edinburgh Castle. Located at the heart of the city’s World Heritage Site, the park was created in two phases in the 1770s and 1820s following the long draining of the Nor Loch, an artificial lake that formed part of the castle’s medieval defenses. The site now includes several prominent statues and memorials, including the Scott Monument, a Gothic spire built in 1844 to honor Sir Walter Scott. You'll also see statues of the explorer David Livingstone and poet Allan Ramsay, as well as the world’s first floral clock, displaying over 30,000 colorful plants. • So pretty and lots of things to see. Love the flowers, the fountain, the views of the castle. Definitely worth a stroll when you are in Edinburgh.  more »
  • One of the most beautiful places I have been in picnic. Enough room for all, great view. Shopping street just above.  more »

  • It is amazing to have such a beautiful park right in the middle of the city centre. Edinburgh is one of the best cities in the world and you can easily tell how much the Scots love their heritage and public places by just having a walk around. Thank you Edinburgh, you allowed me to live here for 10 years and you'll be really missed.
  • No words to ever describe Edinburgh. Simply beautiful. A lot of history-which the British keep taking credit for. I hope Scotland gains independence soon. I enjoyed my time there very much.
