Trip Planner: Europe / UK / Scotland / Scottish Highlands / Caithness and Sutherland / Durness / Mudness Ceramics
I am a ceramic artist based in the far north west Scottish Highlands. Our Durness trip planner makes visiting Mudness Ceramics and other Durness attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
Originally from Austria, I came to Scotland in 1991 as an apprentice potter working for Lotte Glob in the Far North Pottery in Balnakeil. I previously attended the Keramikschule in Stoob and worked in pottery workshops in Austria and Greece. Inspired by the rugged landscape of the North, I started to develop my own style and displayed and sold my work in Balnakeil Craft Village. The constant change of light and colour reflecting in the landscape is shown in a wide range of functional and decorative pieces.
Most of my work is fired in an electric kiln to around 1120C. However, I also have a selection of stoneware and porcelain fired in a wood kiln and pit fired earthenware.
In the winter I hand spin wool from local fleeces and then the wool is woven in to rugs on a peg loom. In addition to this work, I hand paint silk scarves, enjoying the contrast between working with clay and working with textiles.
