Dunkeld Cathedral, Dunkeld

Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Dunkeld Cathedral is a Church of Scotland place of worship which stands on the north bank of the River Tay in Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Built in square-stone style of predominantly grey sandstone, the cathedral proper was begun in 1260 and completed in 1501. It stands on the site of the former Culdee Monastery of Dunkeld, stones from which can be seen as an irregular reddish streak in the eastern gable.

It is not formally a 'cathedral', as the Church of Scotland nowadays has neither cathedrals nor bishops, but it is one of a number of similar former cathedrals which has continued to carry the name.

  • Beautiful grounds and magnificent building. Unfortunately closed at the moment and you are unable to visit inside the building.  more »
  • Website indicated that grounds were open even if parish church was closed. This was not the case. All access gates to grounds locked shut. A shame as we had planned a break here whilst travelling....  more »

  • Amazing place. Such a pretty village between green forests and smooth rivers. Quiet, tidy and clean. Almost perfect for a relaxing walk with relatives and friends
  • A beautiful and peaceful place, the buildings are in two parts. There’s the old building that’s covered in scaffolding and the newer part the is a functioning cathedral. Heritage Scotland looks after the older part, which can only be viewed from the outside until major work is finished. The more modern part you can visit. We found a very interesting museum inside.
