Black Country Living Museum, Dudley

Must see · Specialty Museum · Museum
An intricately designed open-air complex of red-brick constructions, cobbled streets, and renovated storefronts spread over 10.5 hectares (26 acres), Black Country Living Museum serves to preserve a number of important buildings from the Black Country region. Many of the buildings in the museum were transferred from their original locations to faithfully recreate a working village portraying life in the period between the 1850s to the 1950s. Wander in and out of the houses, shops, and workshops, each of which contains notable artifacts. In all, the complex contains 80,000 items, including a steam-powered Turner-Miesse car, two mine shafts, and a few limekilns. Check out the pharmacy and the original supplies it holds, wave to costumed staff as you ride past them aboard a vintage public bus, and watch smiths forge chains and nails. And when hunger calls, stop into the fish n' chips shop for a taste of the British staple--the fries here are as thick as your thumb and twice as long. • Have been to the Black Country Museum today, very good. Last visited the site 20 years ago, the site has changed a lot and there are many more properties and we were told of further developments. I would just suggest that it would be more authentic if in the refreshment areas to have China cups and saucers and plates, they can be obtained economically from charity shops generally or now many have a retro section?
  • Absolutely love this place. My family history right here.. Was lovely taking my kids to show them their roots and how life has changed over the years and how kids had to work and appreciated the small things in life... How today, they take so much for granted.. How I'd love to live that life again where respect was expected... I shall be visiting again :)
