Mull Head Nature Reserve, Deerness

4.9
#3 of 9 in Parks in Mainland
Hike through the high cliffs and heathland of Mull Head Nature Reserve, where layers of mud and sand formed sedimentary rock some 390 million years ago. Over time, the constant surf has carved out stacks, caves, and blowholes in this spectacular landscape. Bird-watchers should look for nesting guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, and kittiwakes on the cliffs, as well as skuas and gulls in the heath. The reserve offers trails of different length: go along the coastline to walk around the whole reserve, or take a steep path to see the remains of a Norse chapel. Stop in the visitors' center to learn more about the landscapes and attractions you can see during your hike. Put Mull Head Nature Reserve on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Deerness day trip planner.

  • One of my favourite walks from The Gloup car park, carry on along the cliff to the Bough of Deerness, then carry on walking around the coastline to Mull head it will take you in a circular back to the car park.
  • Orkney has a short tourist season, and most people come for the staggeringly beautiful vistas and walks. If you want to get off the beaten path, at least as far off it as you can in the busy summer months, try Mull Head. We had the good fortune of absolutely perfect weather, but I suspect it's beautiful any time. Just you and the birds!
