National Trust - Dunstanburgh Castle, Craster

4.4
#3 of 11 in Historic Sites in Alnwick
On a quiet, picturesque coast resides National Trust - Dunstanburgh Castle, the largest of its kind in Northumberland. Erected in 1313, the castle was built on a far grander scale than was originally recognized. As the focus of fierce fighting during the Wars of the Roses, it was twice besieged and captured by Yorkist forces, and subsequently fell into decay. Be sure you explore the twin-towered keep, and walk down to the water to view the ruins from the coastline. A visit to National Trust - Dunstanburgh Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Alnwick trip itinerary planning tool to plot your vacation.

  • The reviews say it all. A lovely walk by the sea from Craster to the ruins of the castle. About 3 miles return on a fairly flat reasonable footpath.  more »

  • A great walk from Craster to the castle!! Very interesting place with pleasant staff. The views are tremendous. If you're not with the English Heritage or National Trust, the prices are very reasonable. Well worth a trip up to the headland to see it all.
  • It's a castle, it's not complete you cant live in it. Get a good view, long arse walk to it. Especially in the wind but if your into that it's a good, I enjoyed it, I like castles though. Shame a about the golf course the other side spoils a good view, damn golfers
