Hardwick Hall and Gardens, Chesterfield

Created in the late 1500's for one of England's most notable society female figures, Bess of Hardwick, Hardwick Hall and Gardens was an architectural and botanical "marvel of its time." Today, as a property of the National Trust, Hardwick Hall exhibits some of the finest collections of Elizabethan tapestries and embroidery work dating from the 16th century. After touring the hall, take a leisurely stroll or a guided tour through one of the four gardens, with their exquisite lawns, orchards, and fine herbs. It was, after all, an estate fit for one of the wealthiest women in England. There are children's activities, such as portrait drawing and walking the Nature Detective Trail. • The Hardwick Hall and Gardens is a National Trust property. It is currently undergoing renovations but it is still a nice place for a walk around. I saw my first Snow Drops of the season. I can’t...  more »
  • Went to the restaurant at the hall today. Seriously overpriced. I had the brie and cranberry rarebit. 2 incredibly small slices of bread the size of a palm of my hand with half a plateful of rocket...  more »

  • What a beautiful place! We couldn't go in the formal gardens with our dog, but there were other garden areas and still so much to see. Activities for the kids and a lovely little ice cream parlour. Whether you just want to go for a walk or take your picnic blanket and make a day of it, it's a lovely place.
  • The best National Trust property that I've visited in many a year. The setting is stunning and the contents of the Hall are fantastic. You also get the story of two remarkable women; Bess of Hardwick and Dowager Duchess Evelyn who was the last Cavendish to live in the Hall. Allow plenty of time for a full visit. You'll also need to be a confident and considerate driver to negotiate the single lane road with many passing places on the (one?) way to the entrance. Also NT site postcode may take you to exit as a first stop.
