Solway Aviation Museum, Carlisle

#3 of 7 in Museums in Carlisle
Solway Aviation Museum is home to a collection of aircraft, aviation artifacts and displays reflecting Britain’s position as a world leader in aircraft design and innovation at the dawn of the jet age.

The museum's primary objective is the preservation of our aviation heritage, its display and interpretation. Take a nostalgic journey back to Wartime Cumberland and the men and women of the RAF who served in WWII.

The museum is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who give up their free time to painstakingly restore many of the exhibits. Through their love and knowledge they are preserving aviation history for generations to come.

  • Great place with plenty of variation in aircraft etc both inside and out. Worth a revisit at a future date.  more »
  • My husband and I spent a lovely morning at the museum. We went to see the Vulcan, but there were a lot of other planes there too. The indoor displays were very interesting.  more »

  • A gem of a museum alongside Carlisle Airport. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers take great pride in the aircraft and some are open for visitors to enter, others are in various stages of restoration and it's interesting to see the work progressing. There are very interesting guided tours of the Vulcan bomber which is also being repainted at the moment. Displays of engines and equipment are in the old RAF buildings. The gift shop is well stocked with models, clothing, and souvenirs, all at good prices. Drinks and snacks are available as well. Will definately return.
  • This is a real gem of an aviation collection. A warm welcome was had from the very enthusiastic volunteers many of them double also as restorers of the collection. Always very knowledgeable about individual aircraft & exhibits, very keen to share the background stories & history of the site. The recent completion of the F-4 Phantom is very impressive with a great deal of attention to detail. The other aircraft in the collection are great to see & in time will see their own restoration taking place. The highlight is the Vulcan cockpit tour which is fabulous this is not something that can be done at other collections that have a Vulcan, the group has kept XJ823 looking great both externally & internally. Leave yourself plenty of time to soak up the collection & take in all the exhibits in the main buildings also, there is lots in there to see & read about. Tea & coffee facilities with snacks & sweets, plus a gift shop with many different items to buy including models. A really enjoyable place to visit.
