Dating back to 597, Canterbury Cathedral is the oldest and arguably the most famous Christian structure in the UK. Forming part of a World Heritage Site, the cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Reconstructed in 1174 after a devastating fire, the building was greatly enlarged to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral by the order of King Henry II. A fine example of Gothic architecture, the cathedral is also noted for its collection of over 30,000 books and pamphlets printed before the 20th century. • In this cathedral you can breathe medieval air. Interesting visit for the uninitiated, unmissable for those who know its history. Admission of course for a fee, as usual in England.

  • Lovely building, loads to see. Best way is to take your time, absorb the history. It's worth sitting quietly in the crypt, just for the quiet, away from the modern world. If the weather is good, take a stroll in the grounds. Be aware, if you leave via the shop it's a one way trip, the staff can be a little odd in there.
  • Absolute wonderful cathedral in the heart of Canterbury -about an hour away from London. The architectonics are breathtaking (see pictures below), if one has the opportunity I would recommend visiting the cathedral at mass times. Entry prices are not too high and the inside not too crowded with people. I would 100% recommend a visit if you are in the London area!! :)
