Great St Mary's Church (Church of England), Cambridge

4.5
Great St Mary’s has maintained its witness to the faith of Christ for many centuries. It has carried out this mission in many ways as a parish church in the diocese of Ely, as the Church of the University of Cambridge, as a place of prayer and celebration for all the citizens of Cambridge.

Great St Mary's is a community which worships on Sundays and through the week, with a strong musical tradition and a lively programme of activities for all ages including special activities for children. A wide variety of preachers are invited to services and special events.

The church is also a centre of civic services and events, concerts and exhibitions. For information on how to get baptised, or married at Great St Mary’s, please visit our website.

Great St Mary's has the only ring of twelve bells in the county, on which the ‘Westminister chimes’ of Big Ben were composed and first rung. The pulpit is on rails so that it can be moved to a central position for major sermons and the church has two organs.

The parish is known as St Mary the Great with St Michael, Cambridge, and we also worship in the chapel of the Michaelhouse Centre in the historic St Michael’s Church just 50 yards along Trinity Street.

  • Definitely one of our “high” points (excuse the pun!) on our day trip to Cambridge. The view from the top of the tower over 360 degrees of Cambridge was well worth the £5 entrance fee. A must see!  more »
  • Be sure to go and climb the tower where you have a view of the whole city. There's plenty of stairs, but it's worth the effort. Unmissable in Cambridge.

  • It is a 14 century Church. It is also official church for Cambridge University. Great building. If you want a great view of kings college , I would recommend to buy 5 pound ticket to visit tower within church. Entry is free to church. You may pray and take a look at ancient beauty. Staff is helpful. You may ask questions if you feel.
  • 123 steps to see Cambridge for the top... its' worth every single one of them! Climb to the top of Great St Mary's tower and you'll be able to enjoy the best views of Cambridge: King's College, St John's College, Trinity College, and many other landmarks of the area. The stairs are narrow, but to be expected (building standards were quite different in the 15th century!)
