Enjoy tranquility amidst a dramatic landscape at Buttermere Lake, a scenic lake by a dairy pasture. Take a footpath along the perimeter of the water, and enjoy views of the Lake District's classic combination of lakes and mountains. Climb up Haystacks and Red Pike to get sweeping vistas of the Lakeland. Easy access through the farm and woodland setting makes the lake one of the most popular family strolls in the area. You can usually enjoy some refreshments at two nearby farms--try the locally made ice cream. Buttermere Lake Reviews

This must be one of the best walks in the world. It is a very manageable few miles around the whole lake, with large easy and well maintained paths. The scenery is absolutely stunning from all sides, ... more »
Beautiful circular 8 mile walk, lots of places to stop for a picnic or break. Breathtaking views.
Me and my Mum enjoyed a beautiful walk round the lake, it took us about 2 hours. I recommend parking at Gatesgarth farm, it's £4 for the day and less busy especially if you arrive early morning. Unfortunately the ice-cream kiosk wasn't open but there is ice-cream in the village but we only drove past it on leaving. The roads leading to Buttermere are narrow and windy but there is plenty of passing spaces and beautiful scenery. The Bridge is closed on the route round the lake for repairs so we took the adventurous route across the stream and mud. We are going on a bear hunt sprung to mind but I think there was an easier alternative. (The signs could have been clearer.) It's a very easy flat route with beautiful scenery. I loved the tunnel the best. Would definitely recommend a visit.
