Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary may be the world’s only combined butterfly and otter sanctuary. At the indoor pavilion, thousands of butterflies flit in open space, ready to invite you into their midst. Displays include rare tropical species at each stage of development. Have your camera ready as they fan their wings against your cheek. In the companion otter sanctuary, you'll see a completely different style of play. Three species live in habitats true to their native areas and love to show off for visitors. If you have little ones, be prepared for giggles and requests to stay “just a few more minutes.” By using our Buckfastleigh driving holiday website, you can arrange your visit to Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and other attractions in Buckfastleigh.

  • Unfortunately due to Covid, the butterfly farm was closed but the otter sanctuary is still open and well worth a visit. Visits cost £8 per adult and is for a 2hour visiting slot. Lots of beautiful...  more »
  • My wife bought me an otter experience day and I must say it was incredible. If you are animal lover; you are in for a treat. We had a great time and seeing the otters up close was fantastic. Prepare yourself for a bit of meat/prep which is a little bloody but think of the otter’s enjoying their grub!
  • We went on a really rainy day but this really didn't matter. Butterfly area is really warm and it was wonderful watching all the different species of butterfly flying around. There was a good variety of chrysalis in various stages to see as well as turtles, geckos and other creatures. The otters were fab as obviously the rain didn't bother them and there is a covered platform from which you can watch them playing. The gift shop stocks a very good selection of reasonably priced items. I heartily recommend paying a visit.
