Museum of the Jewellery Quarter provides a guided tour around a time capsule of a jewelry workshop, where very little has changed since the early part of the last century. For over 80 years, Smith and Pepper produced jewelry from this workshop, which was founded in 1899. When the elderly couple retired in 1981, they simply locked the door. Everything was left as it was: tools on benches, overalls hanging on coat hooks, even cups of tea and jars of jam and Marmite. Demonstrations and stories will guide you through the 200-year history of ancient crafting skills that made Birmingham the center of the British jewelry industry. The Earth Riches gallery showcases jewelry made from a wide range of material found in the natural world, including whale tooth, coral, diamond, and platinum. Original jewelry created by local designers and jewelers is available to purchase from the museum shop. Take the guesswork out of planning a Birmingham vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • This is a wonderful little museum, very family friendly and with lots of interest! Plenty to see and enjoy in the museum, but the tour is extra special! Getting to see the inner workings of jewellery making in the 50s and 60s was a real eye opener, and our wonderful tour guide gave lots of additional interesting tidbits and demonstrations. A nice range of gifts too, from 25p for a little cut out of a dog (which you see the guide do!) to high end jewelry from a number of designers. Highly recommended for a morning or afternoon in Birmingham
  • A visit to the Jewellery Quarter isn't complete without a trip to the museum. Easily one of the best free attractions in the Birmingham, it's up to you whether you want to fork out the £4 for the tour or just have a look around the exhibits (which is free). Make sure you check out the times for the tour beforehand! The workshop is a real slice of history and worth the meager price tag!
