Beverley Minster, Beverley

Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Learn the secret history of Beverley Minster and see sweeping views of the surrounding countryside by joining a guided roof tour. The minster owes its origins and much of its subsequent importance to St. John of Beverley, who founded a local monastery around 700 and whose bones still lie beneath a plaque in the nave. The present building, begun around 1220, stands as one of the finest examples of Perpendicular design. The minster is famous for its twin towers on the western front, which formed the inspiration for the design of Westminster Abbey. Inside is the tomb of Lady Eleanor Percy, dated to around 1340, which is covered with a richly decorated canopy and represents one of the best surviving examples of Gothic art. • Stunning church, so much to see. We went on the roof tour up very steep stairs. The guide was very informative and the view out of the top windows was amazing. Don't miss the ornate don't with a very ornate carved wooden cover. Small gift shop and teas and coffees for a £1 donation.
  • We love our British history and the Minster is a fantastic example both inside and out, spanning hundreds of years and packed with fantastic architecture. There are many examples of our military heritage on display as well as all the fixtures and fittings illustrating our religious beliefs. Guides were available to answer questions and offer information as required. Well worth a visit after experiencing the retail delights of Beverley high street
