Paxton House, Berwick upon Tweed

#1 of 6 in Museums in Berwick upon Tweed
"Paxton House, an elegant Georgian House, with a Regency extension, furnished by Thomas Chippendale and William Trotter, set in the beautiful Scottish Borders."

A fantastic day out in the Borders. 80 acres of woodlands, Highland Cattle, Salmon netting on the River Tweed, extensive Adventure Playground, tea room serving home-made lunches, house tours, garden tours, special kids activities and more.

Designed by John Adam, the House is perhaps the finest neo-Palladian mansion in the country with one of the best collections of Chippendale furniture in the UK, specially commissioned for the house. The 18th Century Costume collection of menswear is another major feature.

We are a Partner Gallery of the National Galleries of Scotland with a custom built Picture Gallery full of artworks on loan from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

  • This is a beautiful stately home and I recommend a visit. If you can, take the guided tour around the house. The guides are well-informed and the tour is really interesting. The grounds are beautiful and everyone is so friendly. There are lovely walks down by the river, along with a play area and fairy trail for the kids. The Waterwheel is interesting and well-worth the journey down the numerous steps to get to it.
  • Our wee day out was great, our guide Carol was very friendly, jovial and informative and made the younger visitors feel included by finding teddies. The volunteers at the waterwheel were very friendly and informative. Both were so enthusiastic about the house it made you feel part of it too.
