The Bowes Museum boasts a renowned collection of fine and decorative art in the surroundings of a sumptuous French château. Highlights include paintings by El Greco, Francisco Goya, Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and François Boucher, as well as early works by French glassmaker Émile Gallé. Watch the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton preen itself, and wander through the extensive collections of decorative art, costume displays, ceramics, textiles, and tapestries. A cafe offers both light meals and heartier fare, or you can picnic outdoors in the museum's verdant parkland. The surrounding woodlands, children's playground, and seasonal outdoor events complete the experience. The architecture and history of the building is captivating in itself with wonderful exhibits. I have been visiting this place for almost 60 years.. first coming when very young with my grandparents to see the silver swan automaton. Now I bring my own grandchildren...The Lego exhibition on over the summer holidays, with a trail to follow to redeem stickers and information, has been great fun for us all. So pleased they are prolonging the length of this exhibition....great to inspire our next generation and we intend to make the most of our annual family ticket.
Very interesting and eclectic museum which has a wide range of exhibits and attractions that the whole family can enjoy. Very family friendly and can easily push a pram round the building. Currently has a Lego exhibition on as well as a fantastic display of clothing through the ages. Well worth a visit and a good way to spend a few hours.
