Neptune's Staircase, Banavie

Landmark · Tourist Spot
One of the great engineering feats of its time, Neptune's Staircase represents Britain's longest flight of locks. It took almost 20 years for Scottish architect Thomas Telford to design and build the staircase lock in the early 19th century. Ironically, when the construction was finally put to use 20 years later, there was no longer much need for it. However, you can still see boats being lifted 20 m (65 ft) above sea level through the eight locks--a process that takes nearly an hour and a half. • The staircase is a series of modern locks, that are okay as locks go. There is a cafe half way up, and a steel sculpture you can sit in. All easy access from the free car park. Sorry to give them 3.....  more »

  • Really amazing engineering. An absolute must see if you are in this area. There is a free car park right next to it. If you come from Ford Williams just drive over the bridge and take the first right. There is a long stretched right curve. Just go for a few more feet and it is in your right. It doesn't take long to visit so you should walk up all the locks and down again in the other side. Have fun.
  • A very pretty area to visit. You can walk alongside the canal and locks with ease. If you want something to eat or drink there is a lovely cafe. No problems for wheelchairs and plenty of places to park.
