The Electric Brae is a gravity hill in Ayrshire, Scotland, where a freewheeling vehicle will appear to be drawn uphill by some mysterious attraction. The phenomenon is an optical illusion.EtymologyThe term "Electric" dates from a time when it was incorrectly thought to be a phenomenon caused by electric or magnetic attraction within the Brae. The Lowland Scots word brae means a hill-slope or brow (with which it is cognate). The name has also been applied to other slopes in Scotland.LocationThere is more than one stretch of road known as the Electric Brae. The most famous is on the A719, south of Dunure, not far from Ayr, between Drumshrang and Knoweside. Metal road signs that used to mark the location have tended to be taken by visitors, and have been replaced by a stone inscribed with an explanation of the phenomenon.

  • I had deliberately said nothing about this place to my friend until we arrived, switched off the engine and started going uphill. She literally cried out at the experience. It really is a "must do"  more »

  • These things fascinate me and I have wanted to do this for ages. Stopped on the road where we were apparently going downhill and put car in neutral....to find the car slowly rolling backwards...uphill!! Great fun! Also lovely views out across the sea to Ailsa Craig from this road
  • Went the other day after finishing work Early, it does look like your car rolls up hill. A good illusion. Only bad thing I would say is its on a fairly busy road and cars coming round the corner might no expect people to be stopped there unless your a local. Surprised there isn't a few crashes there.
