#2 of 10 in Wildlife in Aviemore
Rothiemurchus Forest is a remnant of the Caledonian Forest at grid reference NH9209 near Aviemore, Badenoch and Strathspey, Highland, Scotland.

The forest is popular for recreation and contains important European wildlife, including the osprey, Scottish crossbill, capercaillie, crested tit and wild cat.

Stretching from the River Spey to the high mountain plateau, Rothiemurchus sits within the Cairngorms National Park.

Much of the forest is within the Rothiemurchus Estate, in the ownership of the Grant family since the 1540. The estate is now owned and managed by Johnnie Grant, 13th Earl of Dysart and 17th Laird of Rothiemurchus, along with his wife Philippa and their family. In 2014, Rothiemurchus Upper Forest - covering 2,300 hectares - was sold to Forestry Commission Scotland, for £7.4 million.

  • Free parking and absolutely loads of different activities. If you don't fancy any of the more active stuff, just go for a stroll around one of the two nearby lochs or better still hire a bicycle.  more »

  • Excellent area to visit all year round. Great ever changing scenery, lovely walks and cycle paths with variety of outdoor activities available. Good cakes n soup too!
  • A large estate of mixed woodland, much of it native Scots Pine and deciduous such as birch. There's full access on foot and bike using forest tracks and paths, kept to a high standard by the estate. Signage is excellent. There are also many lochs, small and medium size, some accessible by car. It's an excellent option when the tops are clagged in or too windy as there is plenty of shelter among the trees. The Rothiemurchus centre has an excellent cafe and shop. Free advice is available for many outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, bird watching etc. Very good, pleasant and helpful staff.
