Tucked away in Rothiemurchus Forest, enjoy dramatic views, exceptional wildlife, and the ruins of a 13th-century island castle at Loch an Eilein. Walking around the Loch is fairly easy, and part of the Rothiemurchus marked network of paths. It was voted as Britain’s Best Picnic Spot in 2010, so don’t forget to bring a basket. Wildlife enthusiasts should look out for protected red squirrels and listen for the distinctive song of the Scottish crossbills.   • We went round Loch an Eilein twice, once on foot and the second time by mountain bike which we hired at the local bike hire place. It is really very beautiful and the walk was just the right length.....  more »

  • A great walk, between the forest and the lake, would certainly return
  • Lovely walk. 5 quid to park the car but didn't grudge it as I spotted 3 people checking paths are clean and clear of rubbish and debris around the loch.
