St. Mark's Parish Church, Armagh

Motto : In concilio Consilium – In Council, we plan. What a spectacular church. Very sumptuous interior, and looks like it's well cared for. The carvings and masonry work rivals some of the more prestigious churches throughout Northern Ireland.This is one of the finest church interiors I have seen. Although it is only 5 minutes walk from St Patrick's Cathedral, the cathedral is the cathedral for the whole diocese of Armagh. Significant rebuilding and enhancements have shaped St Mark’s into the building used for worshiping in today. The pulpit which was installed in 1896 is believed to be the highest in the Church of Ireland!  A statute was passed at the Church of Ireland’s General Synod, in 1972 changing the status of St Mark’s to become the parish church for Armagh. The extensive Church Yard surrounding the church offers much insight into local history, within which includes the burial places of victims of the Armagh Rail Disaster of 1889, War Veterans and Mr William McCrum (inventor of football’s penalty kick). A beautiful and breathtaking location which brings pleasure in the knowledge that my grandfather is at peace here. "The True Church can never fail. For it is based upon a rock." T. S ELLIOTT
