Likely built in the 13th century and now standing in ruins, Kildrummy Castle is thought to have been one of the most expensive of its age. The former castle passed through the hands of royal families from its construction in the mid 13th century to its abandonment and demise following the failed Jacobite rebellion in 1716. It features a shield-shaped layout, with one edge overlooking a sloping ravine. The different styles of masonry throughout the ruins testify to the castle's evolution over the centuries, and in 1925 excavations led to the discovery of decorative stone flooring and tales of battles long ago. Go on a self-guided tour of what's left of the hall and chapel, where informative signs provide insight into what you're seeing. For the fuller story, ask the friendly staff at the visitor center. This was as good a castle as it gets. Great historic importance, in amazing surrounding. Dont miss it.
Large castle ruins that are really well maintained. There are a lot of very interesting historical placards all around the ruins which makes it a great place to visit and learn about the history of the area.
