St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, Kyiv (Kiev)

4.7
#3 of 410 in Historic Sites in Ukraine
Church · Tourist Spot
Although Soviet authorities demolished the medieval-era original before World War II, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery stands today reflecting much of its former glory. Deemed historically worthless by the Communist government and obliterated in 1936, the church was reconstructed by 2000 as a post-independence project of the Ukrainian government. Walk the cathedral grounds and marvel at the structure's array of golden domes and sky-blue paint. Admire the many depictions of its patron saint, the Archangel Michael, including the golden statue that sits high above the entrance. Be sure to visit the museum to see exhibitions displaying religious artifacts related to the cathedral and documenting its journey through history. • This is said to have been the first church in the eastern Orthodox lands to have gilded domes, hence the name. It was extensively remodelled in the 18th century, but was demolished by the Soviets in 1934. It was restored in the 90’s after the fall of the Soviet Union. The blue walls and golden domes of the exterior are very picturesque. The interior is quite impressive as well, and it is interesting to compare the fresh paintings here with the much older paintings in the nearby St Sophia’s.
  • Such a beautiful place to visit. Situated in a quiet area with well kept grounds. The church is an esthetic wonder, an experience not to be missed. It transports you back to simpler times and shows you such beauty that it leaves you breathless. It is easily accessible for families. You cannot make a trip to Kyiv and not visit this beautiful church.
