Saint Sophia Cathedral, Kiev

4.7
Boasting an array of cupolas and a richly decorated interior, Saint Sophia Cathedral stands as Kiev's premier and oldest church, as well as a famous symbol of the city. Visit the cathedral, begun in the year 1037 as a tribute to a military victory, and marvel at its 13 Orthodox-style cupolas, the highest of which stands at 29 m (94 ft). Take time to enter the building and admire its complement of intricate frescoes, paintings, and decorations, many dating back to its earliest days and of great importance in Kiev's religious life. You'll find, among others, ornate portraits of founding fathers of the church, angels, and St. Sophia herself within, accented with shimmering gold paint and tiles. Don't miss seeing the tomb of Yaroslavl the Wise, the man who first commissioned the building's construction. • I suggest you don't go without seeing it. It's in front of a sizeable square. There are also various events in the square at times. Entrance to the paid bell tower is also chargeable. We have not been dating, we have already seen from different points from the top of Kiev was not very necessary. The inside is well maintained and peaceful. There's a bathroom in the courtyard if you need.

  • Really enjoyed visiting the cathedral which was fantastic. Some brilliant art work inside including modern stuff. Conveniently I made friends with a lovely lady who work on the premises who was on her lunch break. She gave me a good short history lesson, grateful :) Finally, the side museums / attractions included in the price were actually worth seeing.
  • Beautiful and peaceful grounds and fantastic interior. Take your time to wander about, go upstairs to the gallery level and have a look at the side exhibitions too. the other buildings are also interesting and worth a look. Avoid the people dressed as bears or trying to make you hold birds outside. If you stop they will start pushing you for photos, more will join, and they will all want a lot of money. Stand firm, develop a bird allergy and keep well away from them.
