  • I can't say enough good things about Rob and his company Vital Freediving. I signed my two daughters up for the AIDA 1 all day course. They are 15 and 17 years old. We are from South Florida, they are good swimmers and they love to snorkel. They are always diving down when snorkeling or at local Florida springs and I thought this would be a great skill for them to learn. I communicated with Rob via telephone and email multiple times before our trip. He was very friendly and responsive. So much so that I almost felt guilty because he took so much time to write emails that answered all my questions in detail. Even though I didn't take the course, he encouraged me to come along which I did. He's so very nice and warm. The kind of person you feel immediately comfortable with. He's also very passionate about free diving and it shows. He took the time (about 1.5-2 hours) to really teach my daughters the relaxation, breathing techniques, safety information and equipment overview - all which are necessary to properly free dive. Then they headed out to the beautiful bay to actually practice. There was a break for lunch with an hour break for digestion. By the end of the day, they were able to hold their breath for 2 minutes and dive 10 meters (32.8 feet) comfortably. They probably could have gone further if we had more time. And they had a great time doing it. A sincere giant thank you to Rob for a fantastic and memorable vacation day.
  • An avid (and certified) freediver myself, I persuaded my girlfriend to check out VITAL Freediving while we were visiting St John. She decided to enroll in the AIDA Level 1 course, which teaches you safety fundamentals, relaxation and breath-hold techniques, and provides you with coaching that generally enables you to complete freedives up to 10 m (33 ft) in depth. Rob, the owner and instructor at VITAL, invited me to participate in the class as well, his intention being to train my girlfriend and I to work as a team. In freediving, one person dives, while the other person stays on the surface to spot them, so I thought this was a great suggestion and had a good time diving with Rob and my girlfriend that day. We both appreciated Rob's flexible attitude and his enthusiasm for teaching the course. He also stocks a full lineup of high quality, freediving-specific fins, masks, and snorkels, which both of us used instead of our usual dive gear. By the end of the day, my girlfriend had completed a 3 minute breath-hold (static apnea) and several 10 m dives, plus participated in emergency scenarios that left me feeling confident that either of us could rescue the other in the event of an accident. Overall, VITAL was a great experience, and we'd definitely go there to get more training (or just more diving with Rob!).
