Discovered beneath the parched landscape, Parthian Fortresses of Nisa - UNESCO World Heritage Site allows visitors to explore the remnants of one of the most important cities of the Parthian Empire, a major power between the 3rd century BCE and the 3rd century CE. The site, probably founded by Parthian ruler Arsaces, contained a fortress that served as either a royal residence or mausoleum. Although most uncovered artifacts have been moved to museums, exploring the site still gives an evocative look at the preserved, decorated structures of an advanced civilization. Be sure to bring refreshments, a hat, and sunscreen, as the striking landscape is very exposed and there are few facilities and less shade here.
