The Temple of Artemis, Selcuk

#13 of 30 in Historic Sites in Selcuk
Ruin · Tourist Spot
A single column and some stone fragments are all that's left of The Temple of Artemis, the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The spot where the temple stood was recognized for its sanctity by numerous civilizations, including the Lydians, the Greeks, and the Romans. In fact, it was one of the most popular pilgrimage sites of Antiquity. Legend has it that the Amazons build the earliest temple here, as they worshipped Artemis as their chief deity. Throughout the centuries the temple was destroyed and rebuilt many times before finally being ransacked by the Goths in 268 CE; today, little remains of the original temple. Admission to the site is free. Add The Temple of Artemis to your Selcuk travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Selcuk day trip planning site.

  • It depends on your thought about this place that is one of 7 wonder in ancient world because just one column left. But from the view behind that column. There are many civilization through time after Temple of Artemis era including Byzantine, Ottoman and also modern Turkish. Byzantine and Ottoman building behind this column also use marble from this Temple of Artemis to built ( Recycle happened since that era) This is from my guide when I visit there
  • Pretty much had the place to ourselves. Definitely worth a visit to get a sense of the many ancient civilisations that have come before. Do a little reading beforehand to appreciate it
