Unreservedly dedicated to tourism, Kusadasi sits on the Aegean coastline and acts as a gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the country's major Greco-Roman archaeological sites. Nearly half a million people vacation here at the height of tourist season, most of them sun-starved visitors from northern Europe's colder countries. The hills surrounding the city teem with big hotels and luxury resorts, but Kusadasi itself remains a manageable city, easily explored on foot. The walkable town center features the remains of the old city walls and a 17th-century mosque built on the orders of the legendary Mehmed Pasha. Kusadasi also makes a good base for trips to the nearby Greek island of Samos. Kusadasi is in Aydin Province.
