Zeyrek Mosque, Istanbul

4.1
Tour Zeyrek Mosque to see one of the only Byzantine churches to survive Ottoman conquest. As with other Turkish religious sites like the famous Hagia Sofia, this mosque has undergone many changes over the centuries as different empires reigned the capitol. Empress Eirene Komnena originally built a monastery here in the 1100s and dedicated the structure to Christ Pantokrator. During the Ottoman Empire after the fall of Constantinople, the church and adjacent buildings were converted into a school and, later, a mosque. Today you can visit this site in Istanbul's Fatih district for a glimpse into past empires, which are evident in the architecture that has survived several centuries. • For years I have been attending the area around this beautiful building, also because next door was the best restaurant of Ottoman cuisine in Istanbul, the unforgettable and regretful Zeyrekane, now replaced by a library-communal library and by the Zeyrek cafe, which is not The same thing but it remains a very pleasant place, for the building of the former Madrasa and for the terrace with magnificent view on the Golden Horn. But I was not, until this time, able to visit the mosque located in the former Church of Christ Pantocrator, one of the most beautiful Byzantine churches, which since it was placed under the patronage of Unesco as a World heritage site has been subjected to long work of restoration. Finally completed and visible the work, the result is of high quality: very beautiful outside as well as in the interiors, typical of a Catholic building, still large though, over time, mutilated by much of the wings of the original monastery. Advisable to visit.

  • We in Istanbul have planned quite a long holiday, so there is enough time and not the most common places. If you have a free couple of hours available (as the road from Sultanahmet takes about 30-40 minutes), it is worth a peek. The monastery of Pantokrator is now a functioning mosque, we had to wander around, wait for the end of the prayer, but the plus is that there is no fence, which does not give visitors his inscription further than a few steps to the center of the mosque. Wandered, climbed the balcony, reviewed the painting. There was no one inside but us...
