Now in ruins, Tlos once served as the bustling urban center of ancient Lycia. According to legend, this site was home of the hero Bellerophon. One of the city's rock tombs allegedly belongs to him and bears a relief portraying the hero riding his famous horse, Pegasus. After the Lycians, the Romans took over the city, building a stadium and an amphitheatre whose remains you can still see. You can also view monuments of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. The site is quite large and hilly, and a thorough exploration requires a bit of hiking over uneven terrain, so be sure to bring adequate footwear. This is well worth the visit. Unbelievable that this place was only discovered a relative few years ago. Be prepared for a rugged climb to see all of the site. Top Tip: Sturdy walking shoes/boots... more »
I found the view is absolutely stunning but the place is obviously very ruined and very quiet. It is a bit underwhelming because the lack of information - but nonetheless we ticked it off our list. more »
The entire experience was better then I was expecting. The ruins are extensive and at the time of my visit (July 2019) there was a team of archaeologists working on the premises. From the top you have a beautiful view over the entire region, as well as the Roman Amphitheater not far away (which is closed to visitors).
Tlos Ruins has a stunning 360° view if you climb to the castle at the top. We had a fantastic guide who talked about the 4 civilizations who had built on the Tlos sight. Definitely well worth a visit with a guide, otherwise it's probably quite similar to other ruins in Turkey.
