Church of St. Nicholas, Demre (Kale)

Must see · Church · Religious Site
The burial place of the saint known worldwide as Santa Claus, Church of St. Nicholas represents an ancient World Heritage Site that draws both devout believers and casual tourists. Although Italian raiders allegedly smashed the saint's sarcophagus and carried off his remains in the 11th century, the building still contains well-preserved Byzantine ceiling frescoes and floor mosaics. Constructed in the 6th century on the site of an older Christian church, the structure features a vaulted ceiling and belfry, added in the 1860s thanks to donations by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Pay attention to the northeast annex, which contains painted images of various events from the life of Saint Nicholas. Make Church of St. Nicholas a centerpiece of your Demre (Kale) vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Demre (Kale) trip planning tool.

  • Here's a museum and a holy place at the same time. Museum card (Müze kartı) is valid. For all the crowds of tourists: nearby markets with icons have nothing to do with the museum. They are not related. If one wants to buy a souvenir, it's better to get it from the official shop on the territory of this museum because it's a state store with fixed prices. Most of museums in Turkey has one.
  • Great iconic Christian murals and architecture. Building is in bad shape. Many of mural have faded.
