Get closer to the lifestyle of Roman Carthage's upper-class by wandering around Villas Romaines, where well-preserved mosaics, buildings, columns, and other details reveal how and where these people lived. While at the site, don't miss out on the central piece, the Villa of the Aviary--the best-preserved structure here. Other than the ancient buildings, you can enjoy the view from the gardens, which look down on the sea. • This site is part of the ticket for 5 sites. I wanted to visit the museum but it was closed for renovation. This is one of the 3 sites I visited with the ticket and it was the best of the 3! Mosaics.....  more »
  • The Roman villas site is interesting - start under the hill where stone tablets fill caves. The houses are self explanatory and there are great views from the top of the hill.  more »

  • The Roman villas form the quarter containing the largest number of vestiges of patrician houses discovered in Carthage. There are a lot of ruins but the best-conserved house of the site known as the “villa of the aviary”, which was restored provides a good idea of the beauty of the residences built in this Roman city. As we walked down through the paved street we could enjoy the stunning view over the bay of Tunis. Visit my Instagram (kelledstyle) and my blog for more pictures and info ;-)
