World Heritage-listed Edinburgh combines ancient and modern in a uniquely Scottish atmosphere.
Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Abbey will appeal to history buffs. Royal Yacht Britannia and National Museum of Scotland are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore Edinburgh's surroundings by going to Rosslyn Chapel (in Roslin), The Black Watch Castle & Museum (in Perth) and Linlithgow Palace (in Linlithgow). There's much more to do: get engrossed in the history at Surgeons' Hall Museums, steep yourself in history at The Real Mary King's Close, don't miss a visit to Forth Road Bridge, and admire the masterpieces at Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Culloden Battlefield and Dunrobin Castle and Gardens. You'll explore and learn at The Highlanders' Museum (Queen's Own Highlanders Collection) and Castle Gallery. Explore Inverness' surroundings by going to Portmahomack (Tarbat Discovery Centre & Tarbat Ness Lighthouse), Dornoch Cathedral (in Dornoch) and Glen Strathfarrar (in Beauly). There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Fort George, snap pictures at Greig Street Bridge, make a trip to Inverness Castle Viewpoint, and explore the historical opulence of Urquhart Castle.

Traveling by car from Edinburgh to Inverness takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In October in Inverness, expect temperatures between 15°C during the day and 5°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Fort William.

Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Wed): examine the collection at West Highland Museum, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Saint Andrew's Church, then explore the historical opulence of Castle Stalker, and finally take in the awesome beauty at Ben Nevis. On the 24th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: see the interesting displays at Treasures of the Earth and then take in the awesome beauty at Nevis Range Mountain Resort.

Drive from Inverness to Fort William in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 24th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel back home.
