Transnistria

— 2 nights
Known to some as Moldova's "breakaway state," Transnistria can feel like a completely separate country.
Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Tue): pause for some serene contemplation at The Christmas Cathedral, appreciate the history behind The Suvorov Monument, and then contemplate the long history of Bendery Fortress.

To find more things to do, photos, ratings, and other tourist information, read our Transnistria day trip app.

Lagos, Nigeria to Transnistria is an approximately 18.5-hour combination of flight and car. You'll lose 1 hour traveling from Lagos to Transnistria due to the time zone difference. Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Wed) so you can drive to Chisinau.

Chisinau

— 5 nights
Chișinău Etymology and namesThe origin of the city's name is unclear, but in one version, the name comes from the archaic Romanian word chișla (meaning "spring", "source of water") and nouă ("new"), because it was built around a small spring, at the corner of Pușkin and Albișoara streets. The other version, formulated by Ștefan Ciobanu, Romanian historian and academician, holds that the name was formed the same way as the name of Chișineu (alternative spelling: Chișinău) in Western Romania, near the border with Hungary. Get out of town with these interesting Chisinau side-trips: Curchi Monastery (in Orhei) and Old Orhei Archeological Complex (in Trebujeni). And it doesn't end there: learn about winemaking at Milestii Mici, see the interesting displays at Muzeul National de Istorie a Moldovei, let your taste buds guide you at WineTours Moldova, and stroll around Dendrarium Park.

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Moldova earned its independence in 1991 and remains quite unknown to most of the world. As Moldova is located between Romania and the Ukraine, much of its culture borrows elements, such as language and traditional food, from its two neighbors. Moldova sports a rugged countryside with a mild and sunny climate thanks to the neighboring Black Sea. This region's outdoor activities--biking, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring caves--are its main attractions. While Moldova doesn't attract much tourism, it is one of the last places in Europe where you can get a completely authentic local experience.
