The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Do your shopping at Ito Sai Sai and Tosu Premium Outlets. Get some historical perspective at Yoshinogari Historical Park and Hakozaki Shrine. There's more to do: get engrossed in the history at Fukuoka City Museum.

Okinawa City to Fukuoka is an approximately 4.5-hour combination of car and flight. You can also drive. July in Fukuoka sees daily highs of 88°F and lows of 76°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Mon) early enough to drive to Beppu.

Start off your visit on the 3rd (Tue): find something for the whole family at Kijima Kogen Park and then contemplate the waterfront views at Shidakako Lake.

Traveling by car from Fukuoka to Beppu takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Fukuoka in August, you will find days in Beppu are a bit cooler (85°F), and nights are about the same (78°F). Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Nagasaki.

Nagasaki

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II. This history, of course, remains important to the city, its inhabitants, and to the wider world, and should not be forgotten.
Start off your visit on the 4th (Wed): admire the masterpieces at Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, then get engrossed in the history at 26 Martyrs Museum, and then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Catholic Nakamachi Church.
