The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Toji. When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Dotonbori in Osaka, approximately 1h 10 min away. The adventure continues: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Sanjusangendo Temple, and take a stroll through Gion.
