The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Start off your visit on the 21st (Sat): stroll around Ohori Park, take an in-depth tour of Fukuoka City Archaeology Center, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, and finally explore the world behind art at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.

Start off your visit on the 22nd (Sun): steep yourself in history at Heian Shrine, contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and then steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. On your second day here, take an in-depth tour of Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, then explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, and finally don't miss a visit to Gion.

Traveling by train from Fukuoka to Kyoto takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and train; or drive. In March in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 16°C during the day and 5°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Mon) to allow enough time to take a train to Osaka.
