Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Visit Colosseum and Piazza Navona for their historical value. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano and Cascata delle Marmore. Step out of Rome to go to Orvieto and see Duomo di Orvieto, which is approximately 1h 30 min away. There's lots more to do: admire the masterpieces at Galleria Borghese, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Church of St. Louis of the French, contemplate the long history of Roman Forum, and explore the ancient world of Pantheon.
