The resort town of Beppu puts the geothermal nature of the region to good use.
On the 22nd (Fri), take in the natural beauty of Hells of Beppu, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at African Safari, then witness a stunning natural landmark at Umi Jigoku, and finally indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens. On the 23rd (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: trek along Mt. Tsurumi, then explore the activities along Lake Kinrin, and then steep yourself in history at Kumano Magaibutsu.

Formed in 2005 after the merger of several smaller towns, Aso still offers a break from the urbane.
On the 24th (Sun), explore the striking landscape of Aso Geopark. On your second day here, admire the sheer force of Harajiri Falls, then contemplate the long history of Oka Castle Ruins, then don't miss a visit to Nanatsumori Ancient Tumulus, and finally soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens.

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
On the 28th (Thu), stroll through Komyozen-ji Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Dazaifu Tenman-gu, then step into the grandiose world of Onojo - Chikuzenkoku, then steep yourself in history at Nanzoin, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Hakozaki Shrine. Keep things going the next day: go for a walk through Ohori Park, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Atago Jinja Shrine, then take an in-depth tour of Fukuoka City Museum, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushida Shrine.
