Famous for its resemblance to the ancient settlements of Jerusalem and Cappadocia, Matera remains one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Venture out of the city with trips to I Trulli di Alberobello - World Heritage Site (in Alberobello), Grotte di Castellana (in Castellana Grotte) and Centro Storico di Polignano a Mare (in Polignano a Mare). Next up on the itinerary: don't miss a visit to Sassi di Matera, see the interesting displays at Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina, pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica San Nicola, and stroll around Parco della Murgia Materana.

Plan my Matera trip by asking Inpirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

Rome to Matera is an approximately 5-hour car ride. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or take a bus. June in Matera sees daily highs of 32°C and lows of 19°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 1st (Wed) early enough to go by car to Maratea.
