You can do a combination of train and bus from Taipei to Hengchun in 5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of flight and bus. In July, daily temperatures in Hengchun can reach 38°C, while at night they dip to 31°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Wed) to allow time to drive to Nantou.

Nantou provides good access to the cultural and natural sites of the surrounding county of the same name.
