The lake port city of Otsu has a wealth of sites of historical and cultural importance and lies within close proximity to Kyoto.
Kick off your visit on the 4th (Sat): make a trip to Katsuragawa Sokusho Myououin, admire the striking features of Jishu Shrine, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple. Keep things going the next day: get to know the fascinating history of Hachiman-bori, admire the masterpieces at Miho Museum, take in the spiritual surroundings of Ishiyamadera Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Mii-dera Temple (Onjo-ji Temple), and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Komponchudo.

Near the confluence of the Chikuma and Sai rivers, Nagano combines historic sites with nearby forested alps dotted with shrines.
You've now added Shiga Kogen to your itinerary. Venture out of the city with trips to Yugama (in Kusatsu-machi), Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park (in Yamanouchi-machi) and Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort (in Nozawaonsen-mura). Take a train from Otsu to Nagano in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of flight and train. In January, Nagano is a bit cooler than Otsu - with highs of 3°C and lows of -3°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 8th (Wed) early enough to travel to Nagahama.

Rising to prominence under feudal rule in the 16th century, the city of Nagahama sits in the northeast Shiga Prefecture, on the shores of Lake Biwa.
On the 9th (Thu), explore the activities along Lake Biwa, explore the historical opulence of Hikone Castle, then get to know the fascinating history of Kurokabe Square, and finally get to know the fascinating history of Kinomotojuku.
