Gateway to the Highlands

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
Take a break from the city and head to RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and Nairn Beach. Culloden Battlefield and Fort George will appeal to history buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Inverness side-trips: Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (in Glenmore) and Loch Garten Nature Reserve (in Boat of Garten). There's lots more to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Cawdor Castle, examine the collection at The Highlanders' Museum (Queen's Own Highlanders Collection), tee off at Fairways Loch Ness Golf Course, and explore the ancient world of Clava Cairns.

London to Inverness is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. In July, Inverness is a bit cooler than London - with highs of 22°C and lows of 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Wed) early enough to drive to Durness.

Durness is a village and civil parish in the north-west Highlands of Scotland. Kick off your visit on the 16th (Thu): don't miss a visit to Cairn House Gallery, then explore the fascinating underground world of Smoo Cave, then enjoy the sand and surf at Sango Bay, and finally kick back and relax at Durness Beach. Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Start off your visit on the 18th (Sat): contemplate the long history of Glenfinnan Viaduct, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Nevis Range Mountain Resort, then take in the awesome beauty at Ben Nevis, and finally admire the sheer force of Steall Waterfall.
