Ponta Delgada

— 7 nights
As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Change things up with these side-trips from Ponta Delgada: Islet of Vila Franca do Campo (in Vila Franca do Campo) and Furnas (OMIC - Observatorio Microbiano dos Acores, Caldeiras Vulcânicas, &more). The adventure continues: explore the striking landscape at Caldeira das Sete Cidades, explore the activities along Lagoa do Fogo, see what you can catch with a fishing tour, and head outdoors with Outdoor Activities.

For maps, ratings, where to stay, and more tourist information, refer to the Ponta Delgada trip builder.

Green Island
Known as The Green Island, Sao Miguel is the largest of the nine islands of Azores and is considered a natural paradise. These islands were discovered in the 15th century and, according to myth, are reputed to be part of the lost empire of Atlantis. Sao Miguel's most prominent feature is a set of twin lakes, one of which is blue and the other green. Visitors also enjoy the island's park, golf courses, beaches, mountains, marina, and ocean views. Stop for a look at the city's monuments and architecture, and experience the cobbled streets lined with a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and cafes.
