Founded by the Spanish in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the Americas.
Get some historical perspective at Old San Juan and Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista. Sitio Histórico de San Juan and Walter Otero Contemporary Art are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near San Juan: Luquillo Beach (in Luquillo) and Kayaking & Canoeing (in Fajardo). There's much more to do: kick back and relax at Condado Beach, view the masterpieces at Depigment Art, appreciate the history behind Juan Ponce de Leon Statue, and stop by The Butterfly People.

For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Take a break from the city and head to Balneario Sun Bay and Stand-Up Paddleboarding. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Playa La Chiva and Media Luna Beach. And it doesn't end there: enjoy the sand and surf at Caracas Beach, get great views at Puerto Ferro Lighthouse, stroll through Playa Pata Prieta, and relax and rejuvenate at Beatriz Beauty Boutique.
