The resort town of Beppu puts the geothermal nature of the region to good use.
On the 21st (Sat), take in the natural beauty of Hells of Beppu and then steep yourself in history at Kumano Magaibutsu. Here are some ideas for day two: get outside with Angel Kimono Rental Beppu, buy something for everyone on your list at JR Oita City, then take in the natural beauty of Umi Jigoku, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Usajingu Shrine.

Tokyo to Beppu is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or drive. In December, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 6°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Sun) to allow time to drive to Nagasaki.

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Kick off your visit on the 25th (Wed): appreciate the extensive heritage of Yoshinogari Historical Park, take in the spiritual surroundings of Tenkai Inari Shrine, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Dazaifu Tenman-gu, then buy something for everyone on your list at JR Hakata City Amu Plaza Hakata, and finally browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center. A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
Start off your visit on the 27th (Fri): identify plant and animal life at Anbo River, then kick back and relax at Nagata Inakahama, then trek along Seibu Trail, and finally appreciate the views at Yoggo Valley. Keep things going the next day: make a trip to Kigensugi Cedar and then explore the striking landscape of Yakusugi Land.

Do a combination of flight and taxi from Fukuoka to Yakushima-cho in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train, flight, and taxi; or do a combination of train, ferry, and taxi. In December, Yakushima-cho is a bit warmer than Fukuoka - with highs of 18°C and lows of 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
